Variety is the spice of life and we have something for everyone. We offer an assortment of fresh, creative, international cuisine. We believe in making delicious food and offering outstanding customer service. Full service catering is available for all events, anytime. The menus on our website are just some of the ideas we have cooking and we are happy to work with clients and create custom menus. Our team is experienced with everything from lunch for five to a reception for 500. We can provide food, beverage, bar service, disposables, rental equipment, tables, chairs, china, linens, staffing-you name it. We’ll do all the work so you can focus on having fun.

Allspice: History

Allspice Cafe & Catering was established in April 1994 as a café under the name Spice of Life offering a variety of fresh, modern cuisine. Over the years the name may have changed but the heart and soul of the business have remained constant. The original owner sold the business in March 2013. The new owners, Rich and Liz Vizard, are a local Arlington family who offer hassle free hospitality with homemade food from around the world for every occasion.

Rich’s great-grandparents founded and operated the popular Bonnie Doone Restaurant & Thistle Cocktail Lounge in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The business started as a humble ice cream stand and grew to a full service restaurant with three dining rooms seating over 300 people.

Three generations of Rich’s family devoted fifty years running all aspects of the business from the kitchen to the hostess station. The family restaurant had been sold by the time Rich and Liz met one summer while working at an Italian restaurant in Cape Cod. For Liz it was a summer job but for Rich it was his hometown and a passion. Now, the Vizards are happy to carry on the family tradition in the DMV of providing excellent hospitality and great value.

Leadership

  • Rich Vizard, Owner

    Rich literally grew up in the restaurant business.  As a kid he took naps in his family’s Cape Cod restaurant while his father ran the kitchen and his mother was the hostess. 

    After college, Rich spent time in the financial sector before being pulled back into the restaurant industry by a neighbor’s new catering business. Experiences there and with some of DC’s largest catering and event experts, as well as a directorship at a national chain, gave him the know-how to strike out on his own.

    Owning Allspice brings Rich's skills full circle. In addition to his passion for operating Allspice, Rich loves his family, all his dogs past and present, playing hockey, golf, fishing and rooting for Boston area teams. He may or may not be addicted to hazelnut ice coffee.

  • Liz Vizard, Co-owner

    Through college in the mid 1990’s, Liz studied biology and was a volunteer manager of an on-campus coffeehouse cabaret where she learned to make espresso drinks and top-notch cheesy nachos. She spent a couple summers waiting tables at a popular, waterside restaurant in Provincetown before deciding to move to Washington, DC.

    When Liz isn’t behind the desk she can be found at the cafe doing whatever needs to be done. She enjoys being social with “friends” and “followers” of Allspice and posting about events, friends, and food. Liz’s passion for food & vegetarian lifestyle come through as new menu ideas and creative ways to “vegan-ize” dishes.

    Liz loves soup and isn’t embarrassed to say she could eat it every day.

  • Steve Moore, Chef

    For over twenty-two years (1980-2003) Chef Steve served in the US Navy and honed his culinary skills working in the public sector. He spent six years at the Secretary of Defense Mess and then 11 years at the White House Mess, cooking, traveling and running the West Wing Dining Facility during the Administrations of H.W. Bush, Clinton and G.W. Bush.

    Steve left the White House to work as House Manager and personal chef to multiple discerning clients and spent two years as the Executive Chef of a cafe in the Ballston neighborhood of Arlington, VA.

    Chef Steve was the Executive Chef at Allspice from 2009 until 2014 and continues to be an investor, trusted advisor & friend. We swear Chef Steve makes the mid-Atlantic’s best apple butter and World Class gingerbread houses.
